My Story

Overview

Yushan, Taiwan’s tallest mountain, offers a rewarding yet challenging climb via the Tataka Route (8.5km one-way). The ascent typically takes 1-2 days, requiring preparation, permits, and physical endurance.

Climbing Process

  1. Preparation:

    • Permits: Apply 1-2 months in advance via the Yushan National Park website (daily quota ~92 people).

    • Accommodation: Book a bed at Paiyun Lodge (3,402m) or plan a single-day round trip (high stamina required).

    • Gear: Warm clothing (down jacket, waterproof outerwear), hiking boots, headlamp, sleeping bag, food, water (2-3L), and garbage bags (Leave No Trace policy).

    • Transport: Travel from Taichung/Chiayi to Alishan, then take a shuttle/taxi to Tataka Trailhead.

  2. Day 1: Tataka Trailhead → Paiyun Lodge (4-6 hours):

    • Start at Tataka Saddle (2,610m), trekking through gentle forest trails and steeper rocky paths to Paiyun Lodge.

    • Challenges: Mild altitude sickness, sustained hiking.

  3. Day 2: Paiyun Lodge → Summit → Return (3-4 hours to summit, 4-6 hours descent):

    • Depart at 3-4 AM for a 2.1km steep, rocky climb to the summit, aiming for sunrise.

    • Return to Paiyun Lodge, then descend to the trailhead. (Single-day climbers: ~17km round trip, 10-12 hours.)

Key Challenges

  1. Altitude Sickness: High elevation may cause headaches or fatigue. Solution: Acclimatize beforehand, stay hydrated, consider medication.

  2. Variable Weather: Rainy summers, icy winters. Solution: Check forecasts, bring waterproof/warm gear.

  3. Physical Demand: Steep trails test endurance. Solution: Train with hiking or running.

  4. Permit Competition: Limited slots. Solution: Apply for weekdays.

  5. Environmental Responsibility: All waste must be carried out. Solution: Bring garbage bags.

Tips for Success

  • Team: Climb with experienced hikers or join a guided tour (ideal for beginners).

  • Insurance: Purchase hiking insurance.

  • Communication: Carry a satellite phone (limited signal in some areas).

  • Best Season: October to April (dry season) for stable weather.

  • Experience: Suitable for those with basic hiking experience; novices should opt for guided tours.
